Ways to Win Slots

Ways to win slots pay when matching symbols land on consecutive reels from the left, in any row position, with the number of ways set by the reel layout.

How ways to win work

A ways to win game pays when matching symbols land on consecutive reels starting from the leftmost, and the row position of each symbol does not matter. There are no line paths to follow. The number of ways equals the product of the symbol positions per reel, so a 5 reel game with 3 rows carries 243 ways and a 6 reel game with 4 rows carries 4,096.

Where several matching symbols land on the same reel, the game multiplies the combinations rather than paying them as separate lines. The paytable in a ways game therefore reads differently from a payline table, and the values per symbol are usually lower to balance the far larger number of winning arrangements.

The mechanic is easy to confuse with Paylines, and the difference is worth keeping clear. A payline win wants its symbols on the precise cells of a set path. A ways win accepts them anywhere on the reel, so long as the reels are consecutive from the left. A third system, Pay Anywhere, drops the reel order requirement entirely and counts symbols across the whole grid.

Some games change their number of ways during play. Designs built on a Dynamic Grid add rows or unlock positions, and every added position multiplies the ways count. The rules state the minimum and maximum ways where the layout is variable, and that range belongs in any fair description of the game.

As with any win system, the ways count describes how wins form and not how often they arrive. The figure a player should go by remains the RTP printed for the version being played.
