Cluster Pays Slots
Cluster pays slots award wins for groups of matching symbols that touch horizontally or vertically, with the cluster size deciding the payout tier.
How cluster pays works
A cluster pays game awards a win when enough matching symbols form a connected group. Symbols count as connected when they touch horizontally or vertically, and diagonal contact does not join a cluster in most rule sets. The paytable states the minimum cluster size, which is commonly 5 symbols, and larger clusters pay progressively more.
Cluster games abandon lines entirely, so the paytable reads as a table of cluster sizes against symbol values. The shape of the cluster does not matter. A row of 6 matching symbols and a square block of 6 pay the same tier, because only the count of connected symbols decides the win.
The mechanic pairs naturally with Tumble & Cascading Reels, where winning clusters are removed and new symbols fall into the gaps. Some cluster games add removal features or symbol transformations during these chains, and the rules should state how each one feeds the next cluster.
Cluster pays is often confused with Pay Anywhere, and the distinction is simple. In a cluster game the symbols generally need to touch, and the size of the connected group determines whether a win exists. In a pay anywhere game matching symbols can sit in separate corners of the grid and still pay, because only the total count matters.
Minimum cluster size, the connection rule and the value tiers are the three disclosures a player should find in the rules of any cluster game. Where one of them is missing, the game is documenting itself poorly, and that is worth knowing before the first stake.
